jhr’s (Journalists for Human Rights) goal is to make everyone in the world fully aware of their rights. Creating rights awareness is the first and most necessary step to ending rights abuses. By mobilizing the media to spread human rights awareness, jhr informs people about their rights, empowering marginalized people to stand up, speak out and protect themselves.

The jhr Internship Program provides university and recently graduated individuals the opportunity to gain work experience and insight into the Toronto non-profit sector. The four month program includes a mentorship with a fulltime jhr staff member, networking opportunities in the non-profit and media sectors, and the chance of upward promotion within jhr.

The period of employment for Fall Interns is from September 7 to December 17. There are 7 internships available for this period.

Assistant to the Executive Director

Positions: 1
Location: Toronto, Ontario (Head Office)
Deadline: August 15th, 2010
Start Date: September 7th 2010 (mandatory orientation September 2nd)
End Date: December 17th, 2010

Hours per Week: 24

Description: The assistant to the Executive Director will be responsible for various tasks, assisting the ED in his daily operations.  The intern will create and manage board documents, manage company incorporation books and manage the ED’s speaking engagements and other appointments.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree in process or completed in social sciences, administration, international development or related field; research experience; highly organized, fluency in French an asset.

Communications and PR Intern

Hours per Week: min 24 (additional if available)

Positions: 1
Location: Toronto, Ontario (Head Office)
Deadline: August 12th, 2010 – interviews will be conducted August 16th and/or 17th
Start Date: September 7th 2010 (mandatory orientation September 2nd)
End Date: December 17th, 2010

Description: The Communications and Development Intern will assist jhr with general communications, such as website updates, writing, collecting information and working on promotional material. The intern will also be coordinating with staff on event preparation, promotional material for events and will likely be communicating with professionals outside of the organization for various campaigns.

Qualifications:

*Recently obtained or currently completing a degree in communications, public relations, international development, journalism or related field
* Experience or demonstrable interest in communications
* Excellent writing skills are essential
* Excellent inter-personal skills
* Very self-motivated and shows initiative.
* An interest in journalism
* An interest in human rights
* Proficiency with various computer programs (Word, Excel, Photoshop,)
* Experience in web development (wordpress, css, html) a major asset
* Fluent in English (fluency in French an asset)

Finance and Accounting Intern

Hours per Week: 24

Positions: 1
Location: Toronto, Ontario (Head Office)
Deadline: August 15th, 2010
Start Date: September 7th 2010 (mandatory orientation September 2nd)
End Date: December 17th, 2010

  • Description:
    Process incoming invoices and payments to QuickBooks, follow up with outstanding invoices, and reconcile accounts payable.
    • Record expense entry accurately corresponding to each project and evaluate the profit/loss of international projects.
    • Reconcile bank accounts to general ledger monthly, and prepare cash flow statement monthly.
    • File receipts, deposits, and payments properly by following organization’s accounting policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Accounting education background.
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting system, such as Simply Accounting, QuickBooks , and AccPac.
    Good understanding of GAAP.
  • Able to work in a team environment

Experience working with a non-profit is an asset

Youth Outreach -School Chapters Intern

Hours per week: 15

Positions: 1
Location: Toronto, Ontario (Head Office)

End Date: December 17th, 2010

Description:

  • The interns will book and facilitate jhr’s pre-made Rights Media workshop to high-school students in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).  The goal is to have more students aware of their human rights and to expand the school chapter program into TDSB high schools. The School Chapters Intern will also update database of schools, contact info and chapter handbook. He or She will assist in establishing high school chapters in the TSDB and in the creation of pledge based fundraisers

Qualifications:

  • Currently completing or have completed bachelors degree
  • Interest in youth and outreach
  • Interest in human right
  • Experience with public speaking
  • Workshop facilitation skills an asset
  • Public Relations and Fundraising experience an asset

Website and Graphics – School Chapters Intern

Hours per week: 15

Positions: 1
Location: Toronto, Ontario (Head Office)

Start Date: September 7th 2010 (mandatory orientation September 2nd)
End Date: December 17th, 2010

Description:

  • The intern will update and maintain the School Chapters portion of the jhr website, assist with chapters wordpress blogs and other social media, improve the aesthetics of chapter resources, assist in creating aesthetically pleasing design for school chapters portion of the jhr website and will likely assist supervisor in workshop facilitation and administration.

Qualifications:

  • Currently completing or have completed bachelors or college degree in computer science, graphic design or related field
  • Proficiency with wordpress.com, WordPress Open Source and adobe design suite CS3 or higher
  • Interest in youth and outreach
  • Experience with public speaking an asset
  • Administration experience an asset

Events and Fundraising Intern

Hours per week: 20

Positions: 2
Location: Toronto, Ontario (Head Office)
Deadline: August 15th, 2010
Start Date: September 7th 2010 (mandatory orientation September 2nd)
End Date: December 17th, 2010

Description:

  • Fundraising Administration
  • Funding Research
  • Grant Application development
  • Assist in developing corporate sponsorship package
  • Assist in obtaining sponsorship for various campaigns and large scale events
  • Assist in planning and execution of multiple small scale event in Toronto

Qualifications:

  • Currently completing or have completed bachelors or college degree in social sciences, international development, communications, fundraising or related field
  • Research experience
  • Copy Editing Experience
  • Experience in Fundraising and Donor Relations
  • Event planning experience
  • Excellent writing skills
