Even if you’re not into radio broadcasting specifically, there will be presentations and workshops on grassroots and community media and reporting, and JHR member David Koch is presenting a workshop on headlines research and writing.

TRAINING DAYS: CKUT is organizing a keynote presentation, hands-on trainings, and discussions from October 24th-26th.
Join CKUT and Media@McGill on Friday, October 24th, when we host Anna Leventhal in a lecture titled, “Roots of Grass: An (Incomplete) History of Alternative Media in Quebec.” This multimedia discussion is FREE and will be held in Arts W-215 (853 Sherbrooke W.) at 7pm. On Saturday and Sunday, from 11am to 6pm, hands-on workshops will include: Intro & Advanced Digital Editing, Researching/Writing Headlines & Uploading for Distribution, Setting-up for Live Radio, Analogue Tape Tricks, Collective Radio Production, Fundraising for Your Radio, and more! Anna Leventhal is a writer and media enthusiast who has been involved in grassroots media initiatives in Montreal for the past decade. She is a recent graduate of McGill University’s Communication Studies Masters program, where she researched public-access television and its potential for radical disruption of mainstream media narratives. She has been a volunteer at CKUT 90.3 FM since 2000, was part of the Projet MOBILIVRE/BOOKMOBILE Project, and is one of the founders of the Bibliograph/e Zine Library. She was the curator of Quebec Alternative: Radical Publications of 1970s Quebec, an exhibition shown at the Rare Books and Special Collections division of the McGill University Library. She writes and blogs for Shameless (an independent feminist magazine for young women), and is the contributing editor of The Art of Trespassing, an anthology of new writing from Invisible Publishing.

Sharmeen Khan is currently finishing her MA in Communications and Culture where she is researching the role of social change, training and community radio. She has been active in community radio since 2000 at radio stations such as CFUV 101.9FM, Victoria, CFRO 102.7FM, CKLN 88.1FM and CHRY 105.5FM. She currently work at OPIRG-York and is the editor of Upping the Anti: A Journal of Theory and Action. She is also on the board of the National Community Radio Association of Canada.
